River Mill Primary School

School Council

The School Council is an important part of school life at River Mill. The school council is a place where pupils are involved in decisions about the school that affect them.  Through these meetings, all pupils have the opportunity to raise issues, share ideas and take part in discussions that involve all of their classmates.  Pupils at River Mill Primary School know that this is their school and their thoughts and ideas matter. The school council allows them to reach a democratic solution.

The elections are held at the beginning of the Autumn Term. Each class chooses two representatives who agree to attend School Council meetings for a whole year in order to contribute to the improvement of the school. They feedback to their class to them know what has been discussed and decided.

The school council is managed by Miss Carley and she meets with the school councilors once a month. The councilors do a brilliant job of bringing idea/issues which are then discussed within the meeting.  Our School Council aims to prepare our pupils for citizenship by teaching them about roles, rights, and responsibilities within our school community.

Our School Council aims to encourage our children to:

  • Develop confidence and responsibility.
  • Prepare them to play an active role as citizens.
  • Develop good relationships and respect the differences between people.
  • To have a “voice” and to share their opinions and ideas with others.

The Eco-Champions have been working with Mr Jordan and have created the River Mill Eco-Project Action Plan for 2023-24.

River Mill is working towards becoming an Eco-School.  We completed an environmental review and have decided to focus on three areas:

  • Transports
  • Biodiversity
  • School grounds

Please read our action plan to find out what we are doing.
